Jon Mayer Reflects on His PGA Tour Debut at The Wyndham Championship

Jon Mayer attributes much of his success to the combination of natural ability and mental discipline. "I'm very talented," Mayer said, "but I have learned to become stronger with my mind. I don’t get flustered on the golf course." 

As evidence of Mayer’s mental discipline, in 2023, after making a bogey or worse, he has bounced back with a birdie 42% of the time on the following hole. It's no surprise then that in his PGA Tour debut at the Wyndham Championship (August 3–6, 2023), Mayer overcame a first-round 79 (+9) by firing an even-par 70 in Round 2 — a round in which he battled back to even-par after starting +5 through six holes.
"I realized the cut might not be realistic, but I had the mindset that the two rounds weren't related," said Mayer. 

As a PGA Professional first, Mayer knows that every experience carries a lesson. Reflecting on his PGA Tour debut, he said, "You have to have an underlying trust that you’re good enough and that you’ll bounce back."

"Experience is how you learn anything in life. That’s why doctors go to residency," said Mayer. "I played in all of those previous tournaments to prepare me for that moment. The crowds, cameras, and grandstands were all very foreign, and uncomfortable, as I had never experienced that before, but I have had to hit a shot over water with a one shot lead, or close out a tournament with a four footer. I've had enough pressure to where in a PGA Tour event, I knew how to do the golf component."
