Alex Elias In a field of 156 players, Ryan Gerard (UNC) is one of fifteen amateurs in The 122nd U.S. Open, after qualifying at The Club at Admiral's Cove in Jupiter, Florida. Gerard bested a field that included Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff, finishing 5-under-par 137, winning co-medalist honors in a 70-player field. Following Gerard's first practice round, Monday afternoon, Gerard was asked by AE Golf News if his preparation for the week had differed at all from his typical routine, to which he responded, "You try to keep everything the same, but I think at a major championship you're just here a little bit more often." Gerard continued, "The course opens a little bit earlier, you have a few more days to practice, and there's some extra people here on the range and course to help you get dialed." As to what Gerard's focus is in the practice rounds, Gerard said, "To just take full advantage of everything that is at my disposal this week and go from there."
Heading into The U.S. Open, Gerard is coming off a stellar season, in which he earned GCAA All-America, PING All-East Region and All-ACC, having led North Carolina in stroke average at 70.35, the third best in UNC history.
