Alex Elias
When Jon Mayer was asked his strengths, he immediately responded, “I’m very talented, but I have learned to become stronger with my mind.” Mayer continued, “I don’t get flustered on the golf course.” Notably, in 2023, after a bogey or worse, Mayer has made birdie 42% of the time on following hole. Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that in Mayer’s PGA Tour debut at the Wyndham Championship (Aug 3–6, 2023), Mayer overcame a Round 1 79 (+9) with a Round 2 70 (E), and in Round 2, finished even-par after a +5 thru 6 start.
Mayer said, “I realized the cut might not be realistic, but I had the mindset that the two rounds weren’t related.” Just as Mayer acknowledged that Rounds 1 and 2 weren’t related, Mayer acknowledged that no two holes are related. Mayer said, “On each hole, you have to position yourself well, in the fairway, or on a certain side of the fairway to attack the pin or give yourself an uphill putt, so the shots on each hole are related, but there's no correlation between the second and seventh hole." As to the lesson, Mayer said, “You have to have an underlying trust that you’re good enough and that you’ll bounce back.” Subsequently, as to how that Mayer's trust has evolved, Mayer said, "Experience is how you learn anything in life. That’s why doctors go to residency. I played in all of those previous tournaments to prepare me for that moment." Mayer continued, "The crowds, cameras, and grandstands were all very foreign, and uncomfortable, as I had never experienced that before, but I have had to hit a shot over water with a one shot lead, or close out a tournament with a four footer. I’ve had enough pressure to where in a PGA Tour event, I knew how to do the golf component."
